Dr. Kyle M. Kabasares is a data scientist at the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute and the NASA Earth eXchange (NEX) at NASA’s Ames Research Center. As a native of San Francisco who has lived in different parts of California, Kyle applies machine learning techniques to remote sensing data to understand long-term changes to California’s terrain, as well as the impact clouds have on data-derived parameters from low Earth orbit and geostationary satellites.
Kyle received his PhD in Physics from the University of California, Irvine in June 2023. For his PhD dissertation, Kyle developed a modeling and analysis framework to dynamically weigh supermassive black holes at the centers of giant galaxies. While in graduate school, Kyle also became an active science communicator and created a YouTube channel with videos covering topics on physics, math, astronomy, and the life of a graduate student. He is currently a YouTube Partner, and his channel currently has over 4,000 subscribers.
During his undergraduate years, Kyle studied Physics and Applied Mathematics at the University of California, Merced, where he received his BS in Physics in 2017. Kyle also participated in NASA’s Student Airborne Research Program (SARP) in the summer of 2016 and studied the impacts of drought on atmospheric pollution in the state of California.
